    1. When looking online for ideas or gifts for my children, I absolutely add “for boys” or “for girls” into the search criteria. Not because I care about how they identify themselves or how/what they play with, but as a frame of reference. “Games for boys” is faster to look up than “games for active children who may or may not identify as male”. Does everything need to be so political? This is a great list of activities! Thank you!

      1. Not everything needs to be political. Just things that are. I grew up in the 60s when there was a large separation between what was appropriate for girls and for boys. It was also the way I learned that males were supposed to be in charge and females had fewer rights. Theres a HUGE and powerful political push to take us back there and beyond. These kind of ideas in this article that are the warning whistles and they ARE political.

    2. Thanks so much for your comment. I was starting a rant in my head because I grew up at a time when girls were limited so much in what we could do and boys were shamed into into not being able to do many things they might have enjoyed. Your simple statement says it well and helped me put the brakes on. Ranting isnt productive or kind. thanks again.

  1. This is the first time I’ve ever left a comment on a post like this but I feel so strongly that I have to now! These are not activities “girls can even enjoy too”, they are activities that any child would love. It is outdated thinking like this that perpetuates ridiculous gender stereotypes. I have two young daughters and want them to get stuck in to anything that they enjoy. Please rename your articles!

  2. The author, Heather, was NOT leaving girls out at all! She just happens to have had 3 boys grow up in her household (I clicked on her ‘more about me’ link). Thank you, Heather, for sharing your wonderful ideas! And you’re right, even though you did not have girls grow up in your household, they also would enjoy these activities. 🙂 Thank you for being inclusive!
